“Ought” and intensionality

چکیده

The syntactic structure of the deontic “ought” has been much debated in philosophy and linguistics. Schroeder argues that is syntactically ambiguous sense it can be associated with either a control or raising construction. He distinguishes between deliberative evaluative “ought”s while raising. However, if there “ought,” implies which word carries an external argument. Chrisman (Australas J Philos 90(3):433–451, 2012) proposes two linguistic tests (i.e. “er”-nominalization passivization) to verify this prediction. I add new test, call intensionality list.

Intensionality and context change

It is arguably desirable to have a theory of meaning that (i) does not identify propositions with sets of worlds, (ii) enables to capture the dynamic character of semantic interpretation and (iii) provides the basis for a semantic program that incorporates and extends the achievements of Montague semantics. A theory of properties and propositions that meets these desiderata is developed and sev...

Intensionality, Definability and Computation

We look at intensionality from the perspective of computation. In particular, we review how game semantics has been used to characterize the sequential functional processes, leading to powerful and flexible methods for constructing fully abstract models of programming languages, with applications in program analysis and verification. In a broader context, we can regard game semantics as a first...

Monads and Intensionality∗

Monads are a concept of category theory which can be used to structure functional programs or even define nonstandard interpretations of the λ-calculus. These nonstandard functional languages share many of Lucid’s unusual features, such as the distinction between synchronic and general functions. In fact Lucid is exactly one of these languages, determined by a simple stream monad. We therefore ...

Expressiveness via Intensionality and Concurrency

Computation can be considered by taking into account two dimensions: extensional versus intensional, and sequential versus concurrent. Traditionally sequential extensional computation can be captured by the λ-calculus. However, recent work shows that there are more expressive intensional calculi such as S F-calculus. Traditionally process calculi capture computation by encoding the λ-calculus, ...

‘ Ought ’ and ‘ Better ’

Sentences using ‘ought’ appear to have some kind of non-descriptive force (e.g. commending, guiding actions, committing the speaker), in which case it would seem that no ‘ought’ statement can follow logically from purely factual statements lacking such force. Yet from factual statements about slowness and liability to breakdown of alternative means of transport it seems possible validly to infe...
